Riyad Abukhalaf

President

Riyad Abukhalaf is a four-year DECA member and a senior at Maine South High School in Park Ridge. He is honored and excited to serve as President of the Illinois DECA State Action Team for 2026–2027!

Encouraged by his business education teachers, Riyad joined DECA his freshman year without realizing how much it would help him grow. He quickly discovered a community where he could explore his passion for business while becoming a stronger leader, teammate, and critical thinker. Riyad competes in the Hotel and Lodging Management Series (HLM) and is preparing for the Financial Literacy Project (PMFL) this year. One of his proudest achievements is qualifying for ICDC twice, where pin trading has become one of his favorite DECA traditions. Now in his second year as Maine South’s chapter President, Riyad enjoys mentoring members, helping them prepare for role-plays and written events, and creating an inclusive environment where every member feels valued and empowered to succeed.

Through DECA, Riyad has learned to blend creativity with strategy, think on his feet, and communicate with confidence. His philosophy as a State Officer is simple: every member deserves access to the resources, confidence, and preparation needed to succeed. This year, he hopes to strengthen an Illinois DECA community centered on competitive excellence, community engagement, and member voice, ensuring members help shape the opportunities available to them.

Beyond DECA, Riyad co-founded Money Makes Cents, a financial literacy organization that has taught more than 520 students across Illinois. He develops curriculum and shares financial literacy lessons through social media and community workshops. Riyad also serves as Maine South’s Senior Class Council President, Model UN President, and a Hawk PRIDE Leader, helping freshmen navigate high school through lessons, mentorship, and support.

Outside of school, Riyad loves traveling. He has visited 27 countries and hopes to reach 100 in his lifetime! He also works as a soccer referee for children from pre-K through eighth grade.

Riyad is grateful for the opportunity to serve Illinois DECA’s members this year. He looks forward to leading the State Action Team, connecting with chapters across Illinois, helping plan and lead IL CDC, and working toward another opportunity to compete at ICDC in Anaheim. Above all, he is excited to help members find the tools and confidence to create their “Next Big Thing”!
